Wilhelm Kåge (1889-1960) was born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden. He was a skilled illustrator and gained notoriety in Sweden for his colorful posters for theaters, lotteries, and exhibitions.
Kåge’s visual creations attracted the attention of the Gustavsberg porcelain factory. The company was hoping to revive interest in its production and sought out artists with new ideas. Wilhelm Kåge accepted the offer, despite his lack of experience in clay, throwing and glazing. His task was to add an artistic touch to the factory’s functional items. He initiated the Gustavsberg studio in 1942 together with Stig Lindberg and Berndt Friberg, which would become the creative hub of the ceramic factory where he worked until his death in 1960.
