Historians of material culture say bowls were invented during the Neolithic era, about 4,000 to 10,000 years ago. Bowls were an upgrade from cupped hands and folded leaves as a way to drink water. And, as our ancestors moved from hunting and gathering into a more settled, agrarian lifestyle, they began to make vessels from wood, stone and clay to hold food and other supplies.
