In 1914, The Baltic Exhibition in Malmö in which Sweden, Denmark, Russia and Germany took part, clearly demonstrated the inferiority of Swedish industrial design compared to the competitors. Outspoken criticism of the displays by authorities ultimately led Swedish industry to engage artists to create original, beautiful and useful objects.
